Doors
This is my favourite writing prompt of all time. You can use it over and over.
It’s an exercise that can ground you in a specific setting.
You start with an object, a door, and then move into the sensory details around that object, before you start thinking about conflict or characters or scenes.
Make a list of 5-10 doors you remember passing in or out of throughout your life.
They could be doors to homes you’ve lived in, places you’ve visited or settings where you’ve worked. They could be the doors of family or friends, schools, recreation centres, gyms, etc. They could be washroom doors, bedroom doors, front doors, back doors, screen doors, garage doors, the tiny doors on a toy car.
Pick one of these doors and write down all the sensory associations that you have with that door.
Then write a story, poem, or play about a conflict real or imagined that may have occurred inside or outside of that door.
I wrote my story “I Won’t Clean the Tub” from Anecdotes using this exercise.
Let me know how this prompt worked for you.
